As the weather gets blistery and things get busy at work, it’s only natural to want to shut yourself up in a cabin for a weekend, pretending you don’t have internet so you can’t do anything “productive.” We’ve got the perfect winter getaway weekend planned for you, just an hour and a half drive northeast in Decorah. Hint: there may be wifi involved, but you don’t have to tell your boss that. 😉
The most important part of this weekend is renting a cozy place to stay. We highly recommend the Knotty Pine Guest House located near Ft. Atkinson, about a 20 minute drive to Decorah. In this beautiful, cozy cabin, you can curl up by a fireplace with a good book for hours on end. Added bonus, you can do so with coffee in hand as coffee grounds are provided by the hosts from a local coffee shop. There are plenty of other cozy places to rent in the Decorah area, too.

If urban living is more your style, check out this beautiful home just five blocks from Decorah’s downtown district. With restaurants, shops, parks, and trails within walking distance from the house, you’ll have plenty to do if you’re not good at “taking it easy.”

Start your mornings with a cup of joe at Magpie Coffeehouse. With its warm and inviting atmosphere, it’ll only add to the coziness of your weekend away. When you’re ready for a bite to eat, you can’t go wrong with Mabe’s, a neighborhood classic pizza joint. For a bit fancier dinner, try Rubaiyat Restaurant. Spend the afternoon downtown exploring the many shops lining W Water St.
End the evening with some craft beers at Toppling Goliath, the well-known Decorah-based brewery with 4 flagship brews and plenty of other selections. Get a behind the scenes view of the stunning taproom with a $10 tour.

After you’ve explored the town, it’s time to get back to your cabin to cuddle up by that fire to soak up the rest of your weekend away!
